On the first day of kindergarten, I was scared and nervous just like every other kindergartener. I heard my sister talk about Girls Inc. and how much fun it was, so I knew if I made it through the day, I had something exciting to look forward to after school. Throughout the school year I continued to go to Girls Inc. every day making new friends, meeting new staff, and attending classes that would teach me important life skills.
It wasn’t until my early middle school years that I realized just how important a place like Girls Inc. is to the community. It’s a place where girls feel safe, loved, valued. Girls Inc. confirms girls have the keys to be successful and strong women in the world.
Throughout my experience at Girls Inc., I have become a better version of myself and am no longer scared or nervous about anything I face in life. Girls Inc. has helped make me into a leader who isn’t afraid to stand up for what I believe in. Being empowered every day by staff and my peers has taught me that it’s okay to be different, to not believe in the same things as everyone else and to make my voice heard.
Erin is currently finishing her Bachelor of Science degree in nursing to become a registered nurse.
